One New Zealand Stadium (or Te Kaha Stadium) is Christchurch’s new state-of-the-art venue that seats 30,000 people. Opening in 2026, it will be a symbol of resilience and strength.

Summary:

In 2020, One New Zealand Stadium (or Te Kaha Stadium) was approved to be built right in the heart of Christchurch. Led by stadium construction experts, BESiX Watpac, The Connect Group are proud to work alongside the BESiX team to help protect what we’re sure will be an iconic Christchurch asset for generations. A project to this scale required significant expertise, planning and measures put in place to ensure strength and weathertightness are maintained.

The Challenge:

One New Zealand Stadium is a project like no other. The aim of the new stadium will be to create a space to reestablish Christchurch as a sporting and cultural hub not only in New Zealand, but on a global scale. One of the unique solutions we had to undertake was ensuring the longevity of grout and sealant in high traffic areas such as the bleachers. Any damage to the sealant due to grit on the bottom of someones shoe could compromise the fire rated sealant's performance over time. More importantly, if a fire every were to break out, an issue like this may cause a faster spread of fire. The Connect Group worked closely with our suppliers to come up with an innovative solution that featured a more stringent and meticulous approach to fire rate the area. For us and BESiX, we could not be happier with the solution. On top of this, we had to seal vertical and horizontal gaps ranging from 10mm - 40mm wide, a challenging task where the right quality assurance measures had to be implemented to ensure a successful outcome. Overcoming these unique challenges have meant that the stadium will stand the test of time. With 30,000 people crammed into watching their favourite sports team or concert, this asset and the people within it must be protected.

The Outcome:

While the stadium is not complete, The Connect Group has made significant process in protecting the asset. Our team has extensively worked on grouting and sealing the perimeter of the stadium to ensure its weathertight for sports and concertgoers to gather into. Our work is often unseen, but it is crucial to the integrity of the build.
